A Franchise Is Not Just For Christmas

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

When I walk down my local high street I see literally dozens of happy franchise owners, from the Vans driving past me blazoned with cleaning franchise logos and Home Decorating slogans to the Taxassists Accountants and Legal Firms I see dotted down the Street. Each and every one of these business owners are making a success of their franchise and the franchise shopbusily going about their day helping out the local community, providing services and earning a good living for themselves and their franchisor partner.

Trawling the Internet though is a different kettle of fish completely.  Forums are full of dire warnings, rip off reports posted to scam sites and entire sites devoted to warning people off a particular franchise.  In fact, visiting almost any general business forum is enough to put one off buying any franchise for life.

Whilst walking down the high street and seeing successful franchises in operation does not paint the full picture, neither is believing everything you read on the Internet.  The fact is only a very small percentage of franchises should be avoided and with the right research you can be buying into the high street picture.

Due Diligence!

“A common example of due diligence in various industries is the process through which a potential acquirer evaluates a target company or its assets for acquisition.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Due_diligence

Quite simply - do your research and avoid falling into any traps where you and your hard earned money are parted for no mutually beneficial reward.

Franchise evaluation forms

Sunday, March 15th, 2009
It is very important for a Franchisor to compile a record of the prospective Franchisee during the time that they are interviewing them. The Franchisor will need to be certain that the prospective Franchisee as all or at the very least most of the attributes that the Franchise business requires so as to enable them to become a success if they are offered the franchise.

This is just as important for the potential Franchisee to know, because if they are looking at potentially investing a substantial amount of their own capital into buying a franchise they will need to know themselves whether they would be suitable or not. The last thing that any prospective Franchisee needs is to be sold a business that they are totally unsuitable for!

An example of a franchise evaluation form is below. Please feel free to comment.

Franchise opportunity finding serious prospects

Franchise opportunity finding serious prospects

It can be so very time consuming searching for people who are genuine and serious franchise prospects. It can prove to be very costly on a franchise businesses resources. There are so many people out there who make an initial enquiry about a franchise business opportunity that are not remotely interested but for some unknown reason they feel the urge to submit the online enquiry form.

Many of these franchise business enquiries especially the ones that have enquired using online enquiry forms from various franchise business opportunity websites fill in the forms with bogus telephone numbers, email addresses or even bogus postal addresses! What is that all about I often ask myself? At least with these franchise business enquiries once their email as bounced back to you and you have found that their telephone number is false you can at least delete them from your records and forget about them!

The really time consuming and expensive so called franchise business prospects are those that go to the next stage of requesting an initial business meeting. There are numerous times that I have travelled upwards of 200 miles to meet a so-called prospect that fails to materialize. I have even had phone calls from franchise prospects whilst waiting for them to turn up saying unfortunately something as happened like my friends dog needs taking to the vets I do apologise can you come back to see me tomorrow! What! Or you travel down to the London docklands for a franchise prospect to say we don’t really like your franchise or brand but we just wanted to meet you, what is that all about! These days I personally request that on an initial visit that franchise prospects come to my office so then at least it cuts out some of the day-trippers and time wasters and also it is a good test of their commitment.

There is also another type of franchise business enquirer who almost goes the whole hog attending various meetings and they even send their initial fee knowing that they haven’t got the funds and that their cheque will bounce, I have had more than one of these and on each occasion that this as happened I have never ever been able to contact the person again afterwards, why do people do this? I have no answer to this last problem, suggestions are more than welcome.

Franchise industry marketing levy

Thursday, January 1st, 2009
Franchise industry marketing levy

It is a common practice within the franchise industry for a franchisor to charge their franchisees an ongoing monthly or annual fee as a contribution towards or in some cases to finance entirely some form of central advertising or marketing fund appropriate to the needs and idiosyncrasies of their particular franchise business.

Usually the franchisor will keep the marketing levy fund in a totally separate bank account and will produce yearly accounts to show where this money as being used.

At any time a franchisee usually as an automatic right to ask to view the latest copy of the marketing levy accounts. The marketing levy fund is not for the use of the franchisor it is entirely for the franchise businesses ongoing marketing and brand building requirements as an whole.

Franchisees although in most franchise businesses are made aware that most if not all local advertising and marketing is still down to them, the marketing levy is more for national advertising, marketing, publicity and building the franchise companies brand on a national level which in effect should benefit the complete franchise group of businesses.

Domestic Household trades explained

Sunday, November 9th, 2008
Domestic household trades explained

Household domestic trades can be divided up into several different sub categories or trades much like those found in other industries such as the building industry for example where you find many trades working under the builders banner, including such trades as bricklayers, joiners/carpenters, plasterers, roofers, ceramic tilers, painters and decorators, electricians, plumbers etc.

The various different trades within domestic housework as I have categorized them are as follows: -

Carpet and Upholstery Cleaners

Carpet and Upholstery cleaners specialise in shampooing carpets and household upholstery.

Chimney Sweeps

Chimney Sweeps specialise in cleaning household chimneys by the use of industrial type vacuum cleaners and chimney sweep brushes and rods.

Domestic Cleaning maid

The domestic cleaning maid will do most household domestic cleaning tasks such as general hovering, dusting throughout, mopping of tiled floors, cleaning of bathrooms, ensuites and kitchens, cob webbing and polishing of woodwork etc.

Home Help

Home-helpers will generally do cleaning, tidying up, dish washing, socializing (providing company for older clients) and general errands such as doing bits of food shopping etc

Housekeeper

The domestic housekeeper is as near as you will find to a Jack-of-all-trades within the domestic cleaning industry. Usually the housekeeper will within reason do the domestic cleaning, tidying up, ironing, clean ovens & hobs, also he/she will usually be quite prepared to include some home help type of jobs such as dishwashing, socializing and shopping errands etc.

Ironing Lady

The Ironing lady will as the job description states do your entire household ironing for you.

Oven,Hob Cleaners

Oven, hob cleaners offer a specialist oven and hob cleaning service to a high standard.

Window Cleaners

Window cleaners will clean your windows externally and increasingly these days internally also.

Also there are categories such as aupairs and live in nannies, but in both these cases I feel that you are beginning to drift a little too far away from the general domestic housekeeper.

There are also an increasing number of cleaning companies that are now offering the services of sexy cleaning maids, but I will just categorise them for this purpose as Domestic Cleaning maids.

Can you spot a trade that I have missed?
