She is allergic to dust

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

We saw an elderly prospective client a couple of weeks ago and as is my way with the elderly and vulnerable i spend as long as it takes for them to fully understand the way that we work and how our charges are paid.

After telling me that he already had a cleaner I asked what the problem was. “She is a young lady and she is allergic to dust” funny you may think, but then he insisted on showing me allergic-to-dust-pompeiiaround and when we got to the separate toilet I opened the door and he said “she doesn’t do toilets, maybe she had a bad experience in the past” I was stuck for words and thought well here goes I’ll lift the lid, guess what? The loo was spotless, not bad for a gentleman in his late ninety’s. Anyway back to the cleaner, she was charging him £10 per hour with no insurance; he rang us up the other day and asked us to find him a cleaner, which we have so the only person not happy is his previous cleaner.

The lesson here is to go to a reputable company with insurance and not just pick a number off a notice board, you don’t know who you might end up getting!

Franchise arrangements are often called chain stores

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Franchise arrangements are often called chain stores.

Franchising (from the French for honesty or freedom) is a method of doing business wherein a franchisor licenses trademarks and tried and provenFranchise business methods of doing business to a franchisee in exchange for a recurring payment, and usually a percentage piece of gross sales or gross profits as well as the annual fees. Various tangibles and intangibles such as national or international advertising, training, and other support services are commonly made available by the franchisor, and may indeed be required by the franchisor, which generally requires audited books, and may subject the franchisee or the outlet to periodic and surprise spot checks. Failure of such tests typically involve non-renewal or cancellation of franchise rights.

A business operated under a franchise arrangement is often called a chain store, franchise outlet, or simply franchise

To be a good franchisor

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

I personally think that to be a good franchisor that you must take a personal interest in the success of all of your franchisees by: -

  • Encouraging franchisees on an ongoing basis.
  • Offer your franchisees around the clock 24 hour support where possible.
  • Be prepared to offer hands on support if a franchisee requires your assistance at any time.
  • Offer franchisees extra training if and when they require it.
  • Keep up to date with all new legislation that might apply to your franchise business model.
  • Make yourself easily contactable either by telephone or e-mail by franchisees.
  • Generate business enquiries for your franchisees.
  • Install a feeling of equalness in franchisees so that they all feel part of one big happy family.
  • Continue to grow your brand by the recruitment of new franchisees.

Can you think of any thing else that could be expected of a good franchisor?

Washing your hands domestic cleaning tip No64

    Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

With luck you will find this household domestic cleaning tip that gives you useful advice on washing your hands to be of use. You will also find below a further link to other household domestic cleaning tips that make up this series of blogs that I am currently publishing on a regular basis.

Domestic cleaning tip No64 offers advice on washing your hands.

This domestic cleaning tip is aimed more, or at least it ought to be at the younger members of the family. When your children have been outside playing and then come back into the house with absolutely filthy dirty hands as children often do, it is a good practice to get them to wash their hands before they start touching your furniture and laying on carpets as this will save the dirt and filth from falling off their hands onto your furniture and carpets.

This simple bit of advice if followed might well save your carpets requiring many shampooes over a period of time.

New domestic cleaning tips are always more than welcome.

Please note that I have produced these cleaning tips in good faith and has such will take no responsibility for any failure or damage that may be caused or attributed by the use of any of the tips given.

Dolly Char - Cleaning up in the 21st Century

    Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

In the UK, the domestic cleaning market has grown substantially over the last few years, and is thought to be worth around £2bn. Although it is hard to pinpoint the exact number of people of working within the industry, the industry itself is vibrant and is always looking for new cleaners. As a society, we are more house proud than ever. Increasingly, we spend a higher proportion of our household income on domestic services and the cleaning products market alone is worth over £500m.

Finding a cleaner is one of the major issues affecting the domestic cleaning industry. In the old days, a local cleaner may have serviced a number of houses on a ‘cash in hand’ basis. Increasingly this is not the case and many households also want a service that is professional and cost effective. Being cash rich and time poor has resulted in an increase in demand, but also an increase in the standards of service demanded.

Every household has their own individual requirements, but recruiting someone who can fit around those requirements is very hard.  This is one of the reasons behind the growth of domestic cleaning companies. Such companies offer clients the piece of mind that they need, by pre checking cleaners to ensure that they are suitable and trustworthy.

The Dolly Char cleaning franchise was launched in 2005 to service the growing demand for domestic services in the UK.  Dolly Char offers its clients a very professional regular domestic cleaning and ironing service.

Dolly Char (UK) Ltd is owned and run by a husband and wife team Robin and Carol Harrison. According to Robin, the business offers a great service to many people who don’t have the time or the inclination to clean their own homes. ‘Many people now have lifestyles that are becoming increasingly cash rich but time poor. In addition, more people are making the positive decision that they don’t wish to spend their precious weekend and evening leisure time carrying out basic domestic chores – they want to employ someone else to do that. The Dolly Char service provides cleaners on an agency basis which means that we help our clients recruit a suitable individual in line with their specific needs. If at some point in the future their domestic help leaves or the client is unhappy with any aspect of the work then we help to find a replacement. This takes away many of the problems associated with employing people’ says Robin.

With an increasing number of households looking for domestic services, the industry is growing at a rapid rate.  The key issues for many people are quality, reliability and cost. Dolly Char offers a competitive pricing strategy that means their services are affordable by a wider range of people than many other professional cleaning services. Dolly Char is looking for people who can manage a domestic cleaning business that is friendly, local and dedicated to high standards of service.

A Franchise Is Not Just For Christmas

    Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

When I walk down my local high street I see literally dozens of happy franchise owners, from the Vans driving past me blazoned with cleaning franchise logos and Home Decorating slogans to the Taxassists Accountants and Legal Firms I see dotted down the Street. Each and every one of these business owners are making a success of their franchise and the franchise shopbusily going about their day helping out the local community, providing services and earning a good living for themselves and their franchisor partner.

Trawling the Internet though is a different kettle of fish completely.  Forums are full of dire warnings, rip off reports posted to scam sites and entire sites devoted to warning people off a particular franchise.  In fact, visiting almost any general business forum is enough to put one off buying any franchise for life.

Whilst walking down the high street and seeing successful franchises in operation does not paint the full picture, neither is believing everything you read on the Internet.  The fact is only a very small percentage of franchises should be avoided and with the right research you can be buying into the high street picture.

    Due Diligence!

“A common example of due diligence in various industries is the process through which a potential acquirer evaluates a target company or its assets for acquisition.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Due_diligence

Quite simply - do your research and avoid falling into any traps where you and your hard earned money are parted for no mutually beneficial reward.

    Franchise evaluation forms

    Sunday, March 15th, 2009
It is very important for a Franchisor to compile a record of the prospective Franchisee during the time that they are interviewing them. The Franchisor will need to be certain that the prospective Franchisee as all or at the very least most of the attributes that the Franchise business requires so as to enable them to become a success if they are offered the franchise.

This is just as important for the potential Franchisee to know, because if they are looking at potentially investing a substantial amount of their own capital into buying a franchise they will need to know themselves whether they would be suitable or not. The last thing that any prospective Franchisee needs is to be sold a business that they are totally unsuitable for!

An example of a franchise evaluation form is below. Please feel free to comment.

    Franchise opportunity finding serious prospects

    Franchise opportunity finding serious prospects

It can be so very time consuming searching for people who are genuine and serious franchise prospects. It can prove to be very costly on a franchise businesses resources. There are so many people out there who make an initial enquiry about a franchise business opportunity that are not remotely interested but for some unknown reason they feel the urge to submit the online enquiry form.

Many of these franchise business enquiries especially the ones that have enquired using online enquiry forms from various franchise business opportunity websites fill in the forms with bogus telephone numbers, email addresses or even bogus postal addresses! What is that all about I often ask myself? At least with these franchise business enquiries once their email as bounced back to you and you have found that their telephone number is false you can at least delete them from your records and forget about them!

The really time consuming and expensive so called franchise business prospects are those that go to the next stage of requesting an initial business meeting. There are numerous times that I have travelled upwards of 200 miles to meet a so-called prospect that fails to materialize. I have even had phone calls from franchise prospects whilst waiting for them to turn up saying unfortunately something as happened like my friends dog needs taking to the vets I do apologise can you come back to see me tomorrow! What! Or you travel down to the London docklands for a franchise prospect to say we don’t really like your franchise or brand but we just wanted to meet you, what is that all about! These days I personally request that on an initial visit that franchise prospects come to my office so then at least it cuts out some of the day-trippers and time wasters and also it is a good test of their commitment.

There is also another type of franchise business enquirer who almost goes the whole hog attending various meetings and they even send their initial fee knowing that they haven’t got the funds and that their cheque will bounce, I have had more than one of these and on each occasion that this as happened I have never ever been able to contact the person again afterwards, why do people do this? I have no answer to this last problem, suggestions are more than welcome.
