Robin Harrison is the managing Director of Dolly Char (UK) Ltd. Dolly Char (UK) Ltd is one of the fastest growing domestic cleaning franchise companies in the UK today giving people the opportunity to work from the comfort of their own home.
In the UK, the domestic cleaning market has grown substantially over the last few years, and is thought to be worth around £2bn. Although it is hard to pinpoint the exact number of people of working within the industry, the industry itself is vibrant and is always looking for new cleaners. As a society, we are more house proud than ever. Increasingly, we spend a higher proportion of our household income on domestic services and the cleaning products market alone is worth over £500m.
Finding a cleaner is one of the major issues affecting the domestic cleaning industry. In the old days, a local cleaner may have serviced a number of houses on a ‘cash in hand’ basis. Increasingly this is not the case and many households also want a service that is professional and cost effective. Being cash rich and time poor has resulted in an increase in demand, but also an increase in the standards of service demanded.
Every household has their own individual requirements, but recruiting someone who can fit around those requirements is very hard. This is one of the reasons behind the growth of domestic cleaning companies. Such companies offer clients the piece of mind that they need, by pre checking cleaners to ensure that they are suitable and trustworthy.
The Dolly Char cleaning franchise was launched in 2005 to service the growing demand for domestic services in the UK.Dolly Char offers its clients a very professional regular domestic cleaning and ironing service.
Dolly Char (UK) Ltd is owned and run by a husband and wife team Robin and Carol Harrison. According to Robin, the business offers a great service to many people who don’t have the time or the inclination to clean their own homes. ‘Many people now have lifestyles that are becoming increasingly cash rich but time poor. In addition, more people are making the positive decision that they don’t wish to spend their precious weekend and evening leisure time carrying out basic domestic chores – they want to employ someone else to do that. The Dolly Char service provides cleaners on an agency basis which means that we help our clients recruit a suitable individual in line with their specific needs. If at some point in the future their domestic help leaves or the client is unhappy with any aspect of the work then we help to find a replacement. This takes away many of the problems associated with employing people’ says Robin.
With an increasing number of households looking for domestic services, the industry is growing at a rapid rate. The key issues for many people are quality, reliability and cost. Dolly Char offers a competitive pricing strategy that means their services are affordable by a wider range of people than many other professional cleaning services. Dolly Char is looking for people who can manage a domestic cleaning business that is friendly, local and dedicated to high standards of service.

It has being a very eventful and busy start to the New Year 2009 here at Dolly Char with several new faces joining our team of friendly local franchisees.
I feel certain that everyone would like to join me in welcoming, Philip Todd (Cleveland), Philip Docherty (Sheffield), Richard & Megan (Wakefield) and Ysanne Seddon (Warrington) aboard.
Dolly Char are proud to announce the arrival of a new franchisee in Mr Philip Docherty who will operate Dolly Char around the Chesterfield and East Sheffield region.
Phil was born and bred in North East Derbyshire so is very familier with the Sheffield and Chesterfield area. Having been self employed for sometime Phil has owned and run his own DIY shop.
Phil has also worked as an entertainer on the cabaret and club scene. Phil now writes and records his own music for pleasure.
In his own words Phil goes on to say, I was looking for a franchise opportunity when I came across Dolly Char. Although I am always a little wary when considering such offers I was soon put at ease when I met Robin.
After showing me his tried and tested business plan I decided to take the plunge and now looks forward to working along side him and Carol in this exciting venture.
Whoops and double whoops I forgot this is not the high street marketplace where I could advertise an home based business for sale but instead the Dolly Char domestic cleaning blog, please forgive my slip up and except my apology!
Oh well since I have now realized that this should be a domestic cleaning blog post and not a work from home business for sale advert I suppose I ought to make amends, hmmm what can I think of, oh yes I will give you an idea for a potentially profitable home based hobby business for free instead.
As spring is in the air and our gardens are beginning to come into bloom have you ever considered the idea of making, painting and selling garden ornaments?, they are very easy to make once you have been furnished with the knowledge!
All you need to start this home based hobby business are latex moulds, mixing bucket, plywood, cardboard, trowel, Sharp sand, Ordinary Portland cement, water, paint brushes, sponge and paints. An example of what can be achieved without much effort is shown above.
Once you have manufactured yourself some stock you will then need to find some customers to purchase them from you. I would suggest that you could attend craft fairs, garden fetes and car boot sales. Also many garden centres and aquatic centres will sometimes be willing to take some of your stock on a sale or return basis.
As a franchisee, you are the figure representing the franchise company and their franchise systems.
In our own case franchisees represent our company Dolly Char to both domestic cleaners and clients. It is therefore important that our franchisees keep to our franchise systems and maintain a positive image at all times. If a franchisee as a poor personal image, then it is unlikely that any domestic cleaners that they take on will pay much if any attention to their own!
Dolly Char franchisees deal with both clients and domestic cleaners, and we request that they should always be:
Smiling
Smartly dressed in Dolly Char corporate wear
Project a good body language
Keep constant eye contact with the people they talk to
Be well mannered and polite at all times
As part of our Dolly Char induction training, franchisees learn more about how to talk to and engage with potential clients and cleaners. It is extremely important that they work on their delivery and conversational tone, because people warm to good talkers. Learning such skills are a matter of time and experience, as some people find it easy and other find it harder. Franchisees also pick up some of the information without having to ask any questions (asking the obvious can look unprofessional). Here are some simple points that we ask our franchisees to bear in mind:
Philip Todd and his wife Gill live in the Redcar area of Cleveland. Whilst Gill has lived in Cleveland all of her life, Phil moved into the area in 1990. Gill and Phil have been married for over sixteen years and have one Son. Gill is retired after working as a Senior Legal Secretary, Phil has spent most of his life in Engineering work, he has also studied Business and Law through Teesside University.
Gill lists music and playing the Keyboard as her main hobby, while Phil loves to read history in his spare time. Both Gill and Phil enjoy Camping and Caravanning and the Countryside and Nature in general.
Phil wanted to move into semi retirement and was looking for an ideal business venture, when in his own words he happened to come across Robin Harrison, founder of “Dolly Char”.
Robin has been very helpful, and I recently became a new franchisee, representing the northeast. Dolly Char, has given me exactly what I am looking for, and I would recommend anyone seeking an alternative lifestyle, to visit the Dolly Char Franchise Website.

I am currently attempting to dream up some new slogans, headlines or taglines for my company Dolly Chars advertising literature (A5 leaflets A6 cards) in the hope of catching a potential clients eye. If anyone can come up with any unique ideas or suggestions for possible taglines I would be very grateful, although I won’t guarantee that I’d use them of course.
A few of my past efforts that I have used with success are:-
Finding housework a chore? …. Then help is on hand!
Finding cleaning a bind …. keep Dolly Char on your mind!
Need a break from cleaning … then look no further!
I have also come up with other variations that I haven’t used such as:-
Is your wish for domestic bliss?
Let us fight your grime
Need a clean break!
I like the last one above but I have never used it as I am frightened that it could give the impression that my cleaners were very destructive!
Obviously with slogans, taglines or headlines they need to be eye catching and where possible I believe unique.
For the record if my few examples haven’t told you already I run a domestic cleaning agency providing cleaners to domestic households.
Robin Harrison is the founder and managing Director of Dolly Char Ltd and also Dolly Char (UK) Ltd, which specialises in offering domestic cleaning franchise business opportunities throughout the United Kingdom. Dolly Char Ltd specialise in providing a domestic cleaning service within Lincolnshire.
My business is very home based and for the past 8 years I have classed myself as semi-retired. The life style my business as given me and my wife is one of relaxation with plenty of time for enjoying watching our family grow up.
I got my nick name Rocket Robin from my days as a pool and snooker player. I was once an England "B" player and also captained the Lincolnshire County side at pool for three years. I also played for the East of England team. I was a member of the professional pool players association also for a few years playing regular on their weekend circuit.
At snooker I got to the Pontins junior Semi-final in 1977 before losing in a very closely fought match against Jimmy White, having knocked out Neil Foulds in the Quarter finals. I was also very privileged to sit and have dinner with the late great Joe Davies once whilst playing in Wales.
