Company logo is your logo recognisable

It is very important for a forward looking company that wishes to go places to have a logo that is eye catching and once seen, easily remembered. McDonalds M comes to my mind immediately as a prime example of a great logo, it is eye-catching and memorable basically for its simplicity and it is instantly associated with obesity! lol, Other very simple eye catching logos that come to mind are the Kentucky colonel, Nike, Virgin, Coca Cola etc. Looking at all these large businesses they have all gone for a simple design by either using their company names as a simple graphic logo or instead just used a simple logo design that as become an integral and recognised part of their brand as an whole.

Why are some logos better known than others?

Many large companies that do not have or require an outlet on the High Street either to trade from or alternatively to display their products are straight away at a very big disadvantage and can struggle to get their logo nationally or internationally recognised. High Street outlets such as the likes of McDonalds, Burger King, Kentucky’s etc tend to trade in very prominent places, close to busy roundabouts, busy junctions, and motorway services areas etc. This helps them to get their logos promoted to a much larger audience. Also these large companies generate the revenue to enable them to have vast advertising budgets and as such they can get their logo promoted to millions of potential customers through television advertising as well as on billboards up and down the country as well as worldwide. McDonalds like their competitors have their logos on all their food packaging and it is not unusual to see a McDonalds package blowing down the street or stuck out of a bin.

Other companies that are large within their own niche of the market place like Domestic Cleaning Companies, Oven Cleaning or valeting companies, Regional Developers, etc because they are usually not to be found so readily on the local High Street and often rely on basic leaflet distribution, local newspaper advertising, word and mouth, small internet presence etc are never going to get into the same league of recognition with their company logos. This although does not mean for one minute that they are not a quality company or business because their logo is not as recognisable as some of those other business giants! Also some of these company’s logos are only ever seen at the time of initial contact when the company was first spotted in the yellow pages for example. Once the customer becomes a client they probably do not come across that companies logo again, this is not a business failing it is because companies work in vastly different ways as they are offering totally different services. Also it is maybe not a regular weekly event that a client looks at obtaining certain business services it may only be once every five years or so and thus some large companies logos do not get the regular viewing to gain the instant recognition because the type of service that they offer is not an every day item like food!

Commitment required by a potential franchisee

Commitment required by a potential franchisee

If you are seriously thinking about becoming a franchisee, you should have already given very careful consideration to a number of very important points, including:

  • Are you cut out to be self - employed?
  • Will you make a good franchisee?
  • Is your chosen franchise business the right franchise for you?
  • What is involved in running a business?
  • How will you finance your franchise business?
  • Do you have the full support of your family?
  • Having come this far, your future franchiser should also have emphasised to you that, as with everything in life, what you get out of your own business is directly related to what you yourself put into it. Whilst your franchisor should do everything in their power to help and support you, remember that the business will be yours and the franchiser cannot, and should not, run it for you or take over responsibility for it. The success of your business will depend on your own enthusiasm and hard work. You will only succeed through your own commitment.

    Franchise industry marketing levy

    Thursday, January 1st, 2009
    Franchise industry marketing levy

It is a common practice within the franchise industry for a franchisor to charge their franchisees an ongoing monthly or annual fee as a contribution towards or in some cases to finance entirely some form of central advertising or marketing fund appropriate to the needs and idiosyncrasies of their particular franchise business.

Usually the franchisor will keep the marketing levy fund in a totally separate bank account and will produce yearly accounts to show where this money as being used.

At any time a franchisee usually as an automatic right to ask to view the latest copy of the marketing levy accounts. The marketing levy fund is not for the use of the franchisor it is entirely for the franchise businesses ongoing marketing and brand building requirements as an whole.

Franchisees although in most franchise businesses are made aware that most if not all local advertising and marketing is still down to them, the marketing levy is more for national advertising, marketing, publicity and building the franchise companies brand on a national level which in effect should benefit the complete franchise group of businesses.

    Pilot business operation

For any business person that is looking into and seriously considering franchising his or her business model it is essential that they should operate at least one pilot business operation in a different part of the country to where their existing business is currently operating to ascertain that their business model will truly work successfully in different regions of the country.

The results that they gain through running their pilot business operation or business operations will help them to truly evaluate whether their business model is a truly franchisable proposition!

If you are a potential franchisee looking at buying a franchise business be careful to research if the company that you are interested in buying a franchise from ran a pilot business operation before they started franchising out their business system, not every company does, be warned!

Most franchise companies although have run a pilot scheme in their early days, and just for the record this is one business that most definetly did hmmmmm wink

Considering franchising your business then do your home work first!

    Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Considering franchising your business then do your home work first!

If you are considering franchising your business model I would recommend that you first research and make yourself well aware of any potential threats that lay out there waiting for you that could cause you and your business severe problems particularly during the early stages of trying to get your franchise business established in the franchise market place.

Some of the main threats as I see them that could cause your new franchise business to stutter or totally collapse around your feet before it as even got off the ground are as follows: -

Have you priced your franchise model at a cost effective but competitive rate?

Continuing growth of existing franchise business competitors.

As well as your business there may well also be a continuing stream of other new franchise business competitors entering into your chosen market place.

A large quantity of independent small companies already trading in your market place might well make your franchise less appealing to potential franchisees.

Low rates of unemployment could mean a limited amount of new entrepreneurs looking for franchise business opportunities.

There are many other potential threats that exist those that I have outlined above are only the tip of the iceberg, please feel free to contribute to my list with any potential threats that you might be aware of that may threaten someone trying to get their new franchise business model off the ground.

    Franchise Business Intellectual Property

    Sunday, December 21st, 2008

    Franchise Business Intellectual Property

The granting to a franchisee of the licensed use of the Franchise business intellectual property is always included as part of all franchise business systems and packages.

Franchise Intellectual property covers the know how of the operational side of the franchisors business, also any IT involved within the carrying out of the business activities, the accounts and admin side of the business and the use of any trademarks and trade names belonging and associated to the Franchisors business.

The franchisor always retains ownership of the intellectual property and as the network of the companies franchises increases, so also does the value of the intellectual property and brand grow along accordingly with it.

All franchise companies conform to this requirement including this one smile

    Franchise opportunities do your research

    Franchise opportunities do your research

Before travelling many miles for an initial meeting with a franchisor to discuss a franchise business opportunity it is important that the prospective franchisee should be able to answer the following important questions.

  • Are you serious about the franchise business opportunity?
  • Do you fit the franchisors franchisee job description/profile?
  • Have you examined other similar franchise business opportunities to build up a good picture of this particular franchise model?
  • Have you thoroughly researched this type of business to gain a good understanding about it?
  • Have you researched the area that you would wish to run a franchise business from to find out what competition already exists there?
  • Do you have any experience that may be of benefit to you within this field of business?
  • Are you cut out for this type of business?
  • How adaptable are you to learning?
  • Is your existing lifestyle suitable for you to able to run the franchise business properly?
  • Do you have the support of your family?
  • Do you have the self motivation required to succeed with your new franchise business?
  • Can you afford the franchise?
  • Could you financially survive for the first few months while the business got itself established?

All these questions can be answered through doing a little research and I would strongly recommend doing so before arranging an initial meeting with the franchise business owner. You may unfortunately find out that the particular franchise that you were interested in would be unsuitable for you.

This could save you valuable time in not having to travel many miles to meet up with the franchisor only to be turned away due to your unsuitability.

Can you think of any others important issues that a potential franchisee should research?

Franchisors commitment to the franchise business

    Tuesday, November 25th, 2008
Franchisors commitment to the franchise business

A franchisor should be totally committed to building and maintaining a highly professional and successful franchise network. A franchisor should expect that all franchisees will be 100% committed, and as such the franchisor should match their attitude with an equal commitment back towards their franchisees.

A franchisor should treat every single one of their franchisees as fundamentally importance to their own long term goals. A franchisor should consider a failure of any of their franchise businesses to be a reflection on their entire operation. A franchisee should be assured that the franchisor after having taken great pains to ensure that they are the right person to run the franchise business, will dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to the task of helping them make a great success of their business.

The franchisors business relationship with the franchisee needs to be based on joint co-operation, understanding and trust. There must be a mutual belief that if both the franchisor and franchisee are fully committed to making the franchise business successful, ultimately the franchisee will succeed.

Military Service Personnel make ideal Franchisees?

    Friday, November 21st, 2008

Military Service Personnel make ideal Franchisees?

Recently I have been considering if there is a ideal group of people who would be easy to train and make great franchisees.

My conclusion is that military service personnel with their regimented background would make great franchisees as they are moulded through their military training to follow instructions to the book.

They would methodically follow the franchise bible or operational manual to the word without questioning its contents in most cases.

If the franchisor noticed that they were doing something incorrectly within their business operation they would welcome instructions on correct operational techniques without creating much of a fuss over it.

They would work very hard to make a great success of their business and not shy away from working long hours if and when necessary to get their business firmly and quickly established.

Military personnel are these days also used to completing paperwork in a fashion that is organised and legible.

Because of their recent military background they would be physically and mentally fit, which these are two of the greatest assets that they would require to succeed as franchisees.

Military Service Personnel make sure that they are always presentable and would take great care in their personal appearance.

Feel free to mention any other assets that military service personnel might have that would be beneficial to them becoming a franchisee

    Trademark Registration Protect Your Logo

    Trademark Registration Protect Your Logo

If you ever consider franchising your business then I can not stress how important that it is to register your companies trademark. If you forget or just do not bother to register your trademark with the patent office then as your company grows other companies in a similiar line of business to your company might well realize that you haven’t protected your trademark and try to gain some benefit from it for their own company.

Once you have registered your trademark and your franchise business grows so will the value of your trademark and brand.

I can not stress enough how important this is!

    Do not get caught out!
