There are many different names that domestic cleaners are known by today.
The oldest term that I am aware of is a char lady. The term char was used commonly back in Victorian times when domestic cleaners were usually referred to as char ladies. Does anyone know of any older term to describe a cleaner by? Or even where and when the term char originated?
Below are a few names that I know of that are commonly used to describe a domestic cleaner by, please feel free to mention any that I may of missed off my list.

Sexy cleaning maids encourage more business
I have recently updated my marketing material and on my business leaflets I have included a photograph of a sexy cleaning maids. The photograph covers about 25% of the front side of the leaflet.
I have already delivered in the region of 4000 of these new business leaflets and I can honestly say that my hit rate per thousand as doubled. Is the reason for this increase the picture of the attractive cleaning maid or is it because all of a sudden people have more disposable income available to them?
My gut feeling is that it is the maid more than the increase in disposable income, what are your thoughts and have you tried something similar in the past?

Cleaning goddess have you ever come across one?
I have heard many people mention over the years that they have found themselves a domestic cleaning goddess.
Well as most of you are probably aware I deal with domestic cleaners all the time and I can honestly say that to date I have never ever come remotely close to discovering a domestic cleaning goddess.

I have found many top class professional domestic cleaners who are masters of their trade but a goddess they are certainly not.
To be considered a goddess I would have thought that apart from being a beautiful lady, which a lot of my domestic cleaners do fit into this category they would also need to possess some sort of magical or out of these world powers!
Well that’s the bit that always stumps me, as I have never found a domestic cleaner who possesses godly powers. The domestic cleaners I find are hard working, thorough, conscientious, often prepared to stop over their time to get a job finished, but possessing godly powers I have yet to find one!
Maybe you have come across a domestic cleaning goddess or even actually used one? If so I would be interested in hearing your story.

Domestic Cleaning Industry Witnessing Boom Times
Well this recession that isn’t a recession in some quarters is certainly anything but a recession within the domestic cleaning services industry.
With many families in reality feeling the pinch due to the effects from increased costs in basic commodities such as oil and fo od many families who used to have one partner stopping at home to look after clean and maintain their family home have decided that they should both now go out to work to help cover the extra costs of these basic everyday commodities to maintain their quality of life.
For domestic cleaning services up and down the country this as led to an increase in business because now that these family households have felt the need to get an extra income stream coming into their household they are now finding that they do not wish to clean and iron during the evening and weekends and as such many are turning to the services of domestic cleaning companies for assistance.
Do you know of any other industries that this recession that isn’t a recession is bringing boom times too?

Setting up your Home Business Office
If you are considering setting up an office in your own home to run your own work from home business from it is important to consider a few very important points regarding where you would situate your office.
Where should I place my office within my home?
You should take into consideration the other side of your life if you have one (personal/family), it would not be a wise choice to say partition part of your main living room off as you could well find th at in a very short space of time that you are trapped and feel compelled to work all hours, as you would be potentially bothered by your phone ringing at any time of the day/night, also you might well succumb to temptation and feel a compulsion to constantly sit in your office checking emails etc with the door slightly ajar so neglecting your family to a great extent. Also you could well find that during normal office hours intrusions into your working day could become all to common by your family and even friends and this could cause your business problems.
In my own case I have recently finished building during my spare time an extension to the rear of my property to serve as my work from home, home based office. This extension is an integral part of the house and designed in a way that if we were to move it would swiftly be able to convert into a large dinning room or even an extra living room etc. The office is designed so as there is only one door for entering or alternatively for exiting. For potential fire reasons the main window opens to a 90-degree angle to enable any staff to be able to escape if disaster struck and the means of escape through the only door were subsequently impaired. At weekends and during the evenings if I so desire I can now lock my office door and retreat to the front of the house and lead a normal family life.
An ideal room to run your work from home business from within your own home is also a small bedroom if you have a spare one available. Again like my office you could shut the door and leave your business alone during your out of work hours and so devote your spare time to your family.
Personally although my ideal location, although others may well wish to disagree would be to build a purpose built office or convert an existing building such as an old stable block into an office on my land but independent from my household. Unfortunately I did not have this option available to me but I do know that there would be many people out there who would have. This option although would certainly have extra security and insurance implications connected to it so it would be very advisable to do research into these added implications before commencing with your work.
Other outside options are porter cabins and even converting old caravans. Personally but mainly for appearance reasons I would never ever consider this option, as I do not think that it is ideal in ones garden! Maybe I am a snob as I am aware of home based businesses that have gone down this route, but unfortunately its not a route that I would go down.

Recruiting domestic cleaning maids
Recruiting domestic cleaning maids to undertake the domestic cleaning of your family home is becoming increasingly common these days. The domestic cleaning industry is estimated to be worth somewhere between £4 to £8 billion pounds according to various sources and it is still growing at a very rapid pace.
Many people who decide to use the service of domestic cleaning maids often find that their cleaning maid is unreliable, turns up late, leaves early, or doesn’t even turn up at!
How can you minimise the risk of employing an unreliable domestic cleaning maid?
If you are advertising locally to recruit your own domestic cleaning maid then it is completely in your own hands to check out each individual candidate.
Personally I would recommend that you conduct every interview at the candidates’ own residence, this will give you a good idea of each candidates own personal hygiene standards.
Be careful to look out for tell tale signs of unreliability, with experience these can become only too obvious to you.
Ask to use their facilities whilst you are conducting your interview and take a good look around for cleanliness
Carefully formulate the questions that you are going to ask your candidate to get them to open up about their past work or personal experiences, its amazing with the right questions how some candidates will gladly tell you how they have let various people or companies down in the past!
Make sure that you request and check references from the candidate and always follow them up.
Request identification from candidates to make sure they are who they say that they are!
Request that the candidate obtains for you a disclosure form.
Formulate a written contract for the domestic cleaning maid to sign this should cover various eventualities to safe guard you and your rights but also take care to also safe guard the rights of the domestic cleaning maid.
Employ the cleaning maid initially on a trial basis.
Of course you can always employ the service of a professional domestic cleaning company to do this for you, there are many of these companies up and down the country and most will have rigorously checked out their domestic cleaning maids and so save you the stress, time and effort.
Please feel free to add to my checklist.

Spring clean where it came from
The saying Spring Clean originated many years ago when it was not unusual to cover old slate or stone floors with Hay during the cold winter months. Once the weather started warming up during the early spring then the hay would be cleaned away, hence where the saying spring clean came from.

Domestic household trades explained
Household domestic trades can be divided up into several different sub categories or trades much like those found in other industries such as the building industry for example where you find many trades working under the builders banner, including such trades as bricklayers, joiners/carpenters, plasterers, roofers, ceramic tilers, painters and decorators, electricians, plumbers etc.
The various different trades within domestic housework as I have categorized them are as follows: -
Carpet and Upholstery Cleaners
Carpet and Upholstery cleaners specialise in shampooing carpets and household upholstery.
Chimney Sweeps
Chimney Sweeps specialise in cleaning household chimneys by the use of industrial type vacuum cleaners and chimney sweep brushes and rods.
Domestic Cleaning maid

The domestic cleaning maid will do most household domestic cleaning tasks such as general hovering, dusting throughout, mopping of tiled floors, cleaning of bathrooms, ensuites and kitchens, cob webbing and polishing of woodwork etc.
Home Help
Home-helpers will generally do cleaning, tidying up, dish washing, socializing (providing company for older clients) and general errands such as doing bits of food shopping etc
Housekeeper
The domestic housekeeper is as near as you will find to a Jack-of-all-trades within the domestic cleaning industry. Usually the housekeeper will within reason do the domestic cleaning, tidying up, ironing, clean ovens & hobs, also he/she will usually be quite prepared to include some home help type of jobs such as dishwashing, socializing and shopping errands etc.
Ironing Lady
The Ironing lady will as the job description states do your entire household ironing for you.
Oven,Hob Cleaners
Oven, hob cleaners offer a specialist oven and hob cleaning service to a high standard.
Window Cleaners
Window cleaners will clean your windows externally and increasingly these days internally also.
Also there are categories such as aupairs and live in nannies, but in both these cases I feel that you are beginning to drift a little too far away from the general domestic housekeeper.
There are also an increasing number of cleaning companies that are now offering the services of sexy cleaning maids, but I will just categorise them for this purpose as Domestic Cleaning maids.
Can you spot a trade that I have missed?

Sexy domestic cleaning maids for your domestic cleaning requirements
A rapidly growing service that is now being offered within the domestic cleaning marketplace is the hiring out of sexy cleaning maids to undertake your families’ household chores.

Sexy domestic cleaning maids are usually very attractive young ladies although some cleaning companies do also offer you the service of more mature middle-aged ladies.
They cater for clients who require a regular weekly domestic cleaning service for just a few hours on a set day of each week, although they will also usually cater for one off and spring-cleans.
It makes me wonder what type of person or family would wish to employ this type of domestic cleaning service but who ever they are there certainly must be a considerable quantity of them about as there appears to be more and more of these sexy cleaning maid domestic cleaning services starting up.
Maybe you are already using your local sexy cleaning maid domestic cleaning service or are thinking of doing so in the near future? I would be interested in finding out what made you choose the sexy maid service over the more conventional domestic cleaning service?
