Recently the Dolly Char Franchise Annual Dinner and Franchisee Presentation evening took place at the Admiral Rodney Hotel, Horncastle. The event took on extra significance due to the fact that Dolly Char Ltd based in central Lincolnshire and the original Dolly Char Agency was celebrating ten successful years of trading.
The evening commenced with franchisees and guests having their photos taken upon entering the hall. After a pre-meal drink and a group photo everyone sat down for a wonderful three course dinner at approx 7.15. After the main course had been eaten, Magician Paul Cooke entertained each table with some of his spectacular close up magic. At the conclusion of the meal Robin Harrison the Managing Director of Dolly Char (UK) Ltd stood up and spoke for a few minutes about his experiences and most importantly thanking everyone who had supported the event.
Unfortunately due to ill health the expected guest speakers could not attend so Mr Robert Bullard agreed at very short notice to fill the void left! Robert did a brilliant talk for around 15 minutes on the subject of ten year cycles within business and received a deserving round of applause as he sat down.
Following Roberts talk it was time for one of the most important parts of the evening the presentation of the Dolly Char Franchisee awards. One of the directors Carol Harrison presented the trophies after Robin Harrison first introduced each award mentioning about the criteria used for judging each award before finally announcing each of the 2011 award winners individually.
The Franchisee Award Winners for each catorgory were Best Monthly Growth Matt Duffy Edinburgh, Most improved Franchisee Phil Docherty Chesterfield, Best Franchisee Newcomer Deborah Guthrie North Lincs and finally the coveted Dolly Char (UK) Ltd Franchisee of the Year award for 2011 went to Chris Smith Eastbourne. A special and surprise award was then presented by Carol Harrison to Robert Bullard in recognition of him having stepped in at such short notice.
With the conclusion of speeches and the presentation the rest of the evening was taken up by background music which was provided by the Deja Vu Roadshow and a Roulette and Blackjack Table with bottles of wine on offer to the most successful competitors.
At the end of the evening approx 12.00 Robin Harrison again thanked everyone and announced that next year’s event was already booked for September 1st 2012, same place same time!
Robin Harrison who is the MD of Dolly Char (UK) Ltd is one of a dying breed of franchisors who can still be found actively work on their own business.
Robin believes that continuing to manage his own territory/business enables him to keep ahead of his competitors by allowing him to focus on trialing and testing new marketing techniques, business ideas. Those ideas that prove to be successful he then shares throughout his franchise network.
Robin goes on to say that being hands on he can “spot any problems a mile off and offer the remedy at a much earlier stage a really great benefit to my franchisees”.
A small sample of what his franchisees have said about him:
“The support and training I have received from Dolly Char has been second to none and nothing seems to be too much trouble.”
“That must have taken you lots of time to do last night. I am truly grateful for your continuous, unequivocal and relentless support.”
“Just like to say a big thank you for coming over and pointing me in the right direction with the computer.”
Robin also spends frequent days working with his franchisees in their territories offering them his personal help and providing them with his unequivocal and ongoing relentless support.
The Dolly Char owner says that he works tirelessly day and night for the benefit of his franchisees and will not accept second best.
He says that he is often up into the early hours working on updates for his franchisees’ websites and “tinkering with the SEO as well as advertising their businesses to bring more work their way”. He says nothing is ever too much trouble for him.
I was Leafleting in Waddington and Central Lincoln yesterday and whilst walking downhill on Station Road, Waddington, I thought to myself that it should be ‘law’ to have a letterbox over a certain distance from the public footpath. Some of the drives belonging to the houses were a good 50 yards long. If a Letterbox is more than; eg. 10yrds distance away from the footpath, it ought be law to have a box near the gate-post.
The Forth Bridge or Forth Railway Bridge Business marketing and associated ideas? Talking in riddles are we? well not really rather talking more about a few thoughts I had whilst visiting the Edinburgh, Lothian and Firth of Forth region over the past few days.
We were looking out from South Queensferry over the Firth of Forth admiring the wonderful structure and design that is the Forth Rail Bridge and it made me think how the ups and downs of this bridge that was once described as the eighth wonder of the world reminded me of the trials and tribulations of business marketing, infact for a few seconds I thought I was looking at a graph showing me the peaks and troughs of business marketing!
Like the Forth Railway bridge business marketing does have its peaks and troughs or highs and lows. Through my own personal experience to give you just one small example of where I am coming from over the years I have delivered thousands and thousands of leaflets and on occasions I have delivered a few thousand without getting much feedback what so ever (troughs) and then just as I am starting to despair and feel like throwing in the towel suddenly after a few hundred more leaflets delivered I get a few phone calls and from those maybe four or five new clients arrive (peaks).
Anyway enough about business marketing and back to just admiring the eighth wonder of the world that is the forth Rail bridge or Forth Bridge as is its correct title, enjoy my photos and feel free to leave a comment.

Junk Mail and associated rubbish what is all that about I ask myself? Want and where is the criteria that deems that a perfectly well designed and professionally produced leaflet should become categorised as Junk Mail. I have personally designed and delivered my own circulars/leaflets for almost ten years, and on occasions I have had people push my flyer back out of the door, even had people come out of their homes ranting, raving and sweaing at me and even on a couple of occasions had them chase after me.
Some people have signs that read please NO JUNK MAIL, but when does mail become Junk Mail? All my leaflets advertise my business and the service that we offer and have provided successfully for almost ten years and we certainly do not class ourselves as junk or a junk business!
I suppose a perfectly legitimate well designed piece of marketing material, leaflet, circular, pamphlet or the like could be categorised as Junk Mail if the recipient doesn’t have a need for the service that is on offer.
The big dilemma that the leaflet distributors have is that they can not read the recipients mind to know who will and who will not respond to their leaflet. Now if the distributors could read a recipients mind prior to delivering them a leaflet then that would really revolutionise their lives and businesses and cure the Junk Mail dilemma once and for all.
I have recently redesigned some my companies marketing material and on my companies business leaflets I have included a photograph of a sexy young domestic cleaning maid. The photograph covers about 25% of the front side of the leaflet.
We have already delivered in the region of 16000 of these new business leaflets and I can honestly say that my hit rate per thousand as doubled. Is the reason for this increase the picture of the attractive cleaning maid or is it because all of a sudden people have more disposable income available to them?
My gut feeling is that it is the sexy cleaning maid more than the increase in disposable income, what are your thoughts and have you tried something similar in the past?
Dolly Char (UK) Ltd is proud to release its first video podcast. We must thank Susan Marshall from Dolly Char Bradford for kindly accepting to be interviewed for the production of this video.

Well I returned slightly earlier than usual today from an afternoon feeding the mouths on people’s doors with my leaflets.
The reason that I finished slightly earlier than usual is due to the reason that I completely ran out of leaflets and my next order is not due to arrive until the middle of next week! So now I am stuck for a few days twiddling my thumbs waiting for their arrival.
Usually I judge my re ordering much better than this, but what as caught me out this time is the wonderful weather that we are having, I have been staying out for much longer periods of time and hence shifting larger quantities of leaflets per session.

My business is very home based and for the past 8 years I have classed myself as semi-retired. The life style my business as given me and my wife is one of relaxation with plenty of time for enjoying watching our family grow up.
I got my nick name Rocket Robin from my days as a pool and snooker player. I was once an England "B" player and also captained the Lincolnshire County side at pool for three years. I also played for the East of England team. I was a member of the professional pool players association also for a few years playing regular on their weekend circuit.
At snooker I got to the Pontins junior Semi-final in 1977 before losing in a very closely fought match against Jimmy White, having knocked out Neil Foulds in the Quarter finals. I was also very privileged to sit and have dinner with the late great Joe Davies once whilst playing in Wales.
