Keep chickens outdoors cleaning reduction tip

I am currently writing a series of articles that are aimed at what I call cleaning reduction tips! Strictly speaking these cleaning reduction tips are focused more on the minimising of your domestic cleaning requirements in your  household, by explaining ways that you can reduce the spread of dirt and germs throughout your home.

Keep chickens outdoors

This cleaning reduction tip is based on a personal experience of mine that happened many years ago when I used to work on council house maintenance. I went along to replace a ceramic tile above a kitchen work surface and I was warned that the clients’ property was a touch smelly. Upon arriving at the house on that warm summers afternoon I could detect what smelt like chicken s–t/muck and when I opened the clients back gate I was greeted by chickens and a back garden that was totally covered in well chicken muck. I carefully tip toed towards the back door and when the client opened the door to let me in out popped two or three chickens. The chicken muck was also all over the ground floor of the property. The client went on to explain that the chickens had the run of the downstairs but that they were not aloud upstairs! My stomach was reaching and I could not face doing the job and turned around and left. I did end up getting a rollicking from my boss for refusing to do the job!

You can certainly prevent yourself a lot of cleaning by keeping your chickens out doors.
New cleaning reduction tips are always more than welcome.

I can identify with that Robin, but i think before you went out to do the job you should have been given a face mask it doesn’t mask the smell but it helps slightly. A good few years ago i worked for a cleaning company that among other things did enviromental cleans and i never forget my first one.Just before entering the property one of the lads gave me a flea spray to use on my arms and legs, and a face mask and at the time i thought it was a bit over the top. WRONG the house was filthy, fleas and both animal and human excrement all over.No-one prepared me for that and for the first hour i did nothing but retch, and i bet the company got a good price for the clean despite paying us the min wage.

    Hi Susan,

Your comment would make a good little post in its own right.

Some properties are just best left and forgotten about!

That sounds awful Robin. Nice that they didn’t allow them upstairs though isn’t it!
